The Tales of the Teeth of Dahlver-Nar

Image
The teeth of Dahlver-Nar is a powerful magic item that has made an appearance in every edition of Dungeons and Dragons--and changed drastically with every appearance. In its most recent appearance in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything , the teeth are described as "Stories Given Form". The teeth have the ability to summon creatures if sowed in the ground, or grant a special power to an individual who implants a tooth into their own mouth. Each tooth has its own unique magic and pulling a tooth from the bag in the game selects one at random. Everything we know about the 20 teeth featured in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything  are detailed below. 1: The Staring Cats of Uldun-Dar This tooth grants nine lives to whoever grafts it into their mouth-or summons 9 cats if planted in the ground. As for its legend, the cats of Uldun-Dar were described in more detail in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft  where they might be summoned as a result of magic going awry in the domain of d

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft: The Mysterious Fate of Azalin Rex

Image
Azalin makes an appearance as a group patron in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything . Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft , which came out May 18th, is a new sourcebook that provides updates to the horror-themed Ravenloft Campaign Setting. The setting of Ravenloft is made up of countless demiplanes known as the Domains of Dread, over 30 of which are detailed in the sourcebook. Each domain is a personal prison intended to contain and torment a Darklord, a unique villain who rules over the realm. Many Darklords have garnered reputations as deadly villains, including the famous vampire Strahd Von Zarovich, who appears as the main antagonist of the Curse of Strahd  adventure book. The book provides updated lore on many of the most iconic Darklords from previous editions, although the infamous lich lord Azalin Rex, ruler of the Domain of Darkon, is notably absent from the book. Azalin has been an iconic character of the Ravenloft setting since his debut in Ravenloft II: The House on Gryph

The worst homebrew on D&D Beyond

Image
Introduction: The D&D Beyond website has some really useful features, including one where users can share their homebrew Races, Subclasses, and Monsters for Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition. The site also has a rating system where other users can upvote or downvote homebrew. Today, I'm going to be reading two of the most-downvoted homebrew subclasses on the website (and steeling myself in order to eventually do the same thing on DnD wiki). * Shudders* Acolyte of Death (Druid Subclass) This Subclass is granted in granted to those who pledge their souls to The Goddess of Death. Grants The Hand Of Death homebrew. We've got some strange formatting here. The "Bonus Cantrip" Druid Circle feature is identical to the one used by the Druid Circle of the Land. I assume all of these features are unlocked at second level, although the page doesn't make that clear.  As for the " Hand of Death " it mentions a homebrew spell but doesn't actually link to th

Dark Dungeons: The '80s Chick Tract that portrayed D&D as Witchcraft

Image
Background Published in 1984 during the "Satanic Panic", Dark Dungeons  is a "Chick Tract" a short religious comic book written and illustrated by Jack Chick. Jack Chick's comics, which often relied on scare tactics to make people repent, have been the subject of controversy in the past. Chick seemed to believe that only Protestant Christians can get into heaven and often took aim at Catholics, Rock and Roll enthusiasts, Homosexuals, Trick-or-Treaters, and plenty of others for doing Satan's work. Although Chick passed away in 2016, his website is still active, selling his comics in bulk and putting his work on display for those who might order a physical copy. Unlike some of his more offensive comics, Dark Dungeons  is still available from his site although it is listed as "out of print", which doesn't mean it's unavailable. (It means you'll have to custom order it in qualities of 10,000 or more so that they have reason to give it anot
